Warts can be very stubborn to remove. The standard removal procedures used by dermatologists are expensive, painful and many times do not work. Ordinary people have used their own home grown wart removal procedures for centuries. Apparently many of these actually work. Some of the home remedies may seem a little wacky but who can argue with success.

Warts occur when the human papilloma virus enters through cracks in the skin. A hard protein, keratin, released by the virus makes the skin grow too fast thus forming the wart. Warts mostly occur on the hands and feet. Most of the time warts will go away by themselves but sometimes a sufferer will get many warts that spread. You should not scratch or pick at warts because they are contagious and this makes them spread.

There are a lot things about warts that doctors really do not fully understand. In some ways they are a little bit of a medical mystery. Some standard medical treatments are burning off the warts with salicylic acid, laser surgery or freezing them. These are expensive and painful procedure that are not very effective so doctors are hesitant to use them. This is why people have turned to home remedies.

An old home remedy uses apple cider vinegar. Apply apple cider vinegar directly on the wart and cover it with medical tape. You can use cotton to apply the vinegar. You can coat the area around the wart with Vaseline to protect the skin near the wart. People who have used this method of wart removal report that it might take awhile but after about a month the wart will disappear.

Nail polish remover is another home remedy. Someone noticed that their warts vanished when they painted a car. It turns out that auto paint and nail polish remover share some of the same chemicals. Rubbing the wart with nail polish remover on a regular basis will remove the wart.

Vegetables and various oils are also home remedies. Caster oil, tea oil and other oils are used. They are applied to the wart several times a day. Potatoes and garlic are two plants that are supposed to have anti viral wart destroying properties. The potato should be sliced in half. The open part of the raw potato should be rubbed on the wart.

Warts that grow on your toes or on the sole of your feet are called plantar warts. They are among the most painful and most difficult warts to deal with. However, some claim that if you soak your feet in warm water for thirty minutes and then rub the warts with a pumice stone the warts will dry up and the skin will flake off.

There are theories that warts are caused by an immune deficiency. These theories believe that taking immune boasting foods will prevent warts. Other theories claim that bad digestion causes warts. Clearly a good diet and a healthy lifestyle are part of the wart removal process.
